At Maverick Psychotherapy Group, we’re on a mission to connect dynamic, well-trained mental health professionals to individuals, couples, families, and groups in the Catskills and Hudson Valley communities and beyond.
Because we understand that the human struggle takes many forms—relational, social, physical, sexual, emotional, educational, economic, cultural, racial, political, and many other forms—we’re passionate about supporting the whole person’s innate capacity to heal.
We have a set of powerful and truly functional values to help guide us in our day-to-day decision making as we live our mission. These are the three values we hold dear in our work with clients and therapists:
Community, Empowerment, and Dignity.
In keeping with our values, MPG recognizes that achieving social justice in our communities is a transformation that must occur on the inside and the outside of each one of us. The MPG practice is committed to training and education around social justice.
About Us
Maverick Psychotherapy Group, formerly Maverick Family Counseling, began over 30 years ago when founder Barbara Rissman and her husband Dr. Randall Rissman saw the need to offer both medical services and psychotherapy to the Hudson Valley/Catskills community. This mind-body perspective (or bio-psycho-social perspective) continues to be at the core of our work at Maverick Psychotherapy Group.
Today, we’ve evolved into a collaborative group of expert, cutting-edge clinicians providing individualized, deeply personal mental health services, responsive to the family, the community, and the world around us. Our work takes into consideration systemic oppression and it’s influence on socio-economics, race, gender and identity.
We have two New York locations: Woodstock & Kingston.
Maverick Psychotherapy Group is proud to be an independently owned and operated small business.

Our Process
There are many ways to facilitate healing. We offer many modalities in order to serve our community’s diverse needs.
Our skilled clinicians use a variety of modalities to facilitate personal transformation. Many of us specialize in trauma work and are educated in Somatic Experiencing®. The SE method is a body-oriented approach to healing from trauma and stress. The SE approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma.
