Stephanie L. Rooker (she/her) comes from a background in therapeutic sound, music, and voice work with a commitment to liberation from cultural supremacy and systemized oppression.  She views the psychotherapeutic process as an opportunity for mindful and creative inquiry into who we are as well as how we relate to ourselves, each other, and life.  Stephanie believes in voice as a manifestation of our identities as well as a principal element of growth in personal, communal, and societal realms.  Her psychotherapeutic work is rooted in person-centered, body-based, trauma-informed, anti-racist, and LGBTQIA+ affirming practice, shaped by aspects of existential psychotherapy, Internal Family Systems, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

A lifelong exploration of music as a force of healing led Stephanie to in-depth studies in therapeutic sound and mental health.  In 2013, she synthesized an integrative, creative, and holistic approach, called Voice Journey®, which employs somatic awareness, breath, and voice as primary access points for the cultivation of mindfulness, nervous system regulation, self-concept, resilience, and empowerment.  She has since offered this work in private one-to-one sessions, institutional wellness programs, as well as organizations that serve survivors of trafficking and sexual abuse.

Stephanie works with adults and adolescents.  She holds experience in the treatment of complex and developmental trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, sexual abuse, human trafficking, racial healing for white-bodied people, and psychedelic integration.

Stephanie holds a BA in Ethnomusicology from Oberlin College and MS Ed. in Mental Health Counseling from CUNY Hunter College.  Her studies in therapeutic sound include work with the NY Open Center’s Sound & Music Institute, Vox Mundi School of the Voice with Silvia Nakkach, BioSonics with Dr. John Beaulieu, All the Way In with Rhiannon, and Performance Wellness Inc. with Louise Montello.
